A Message from the President of the CAR

Dr. E. A. (Ted) Lyons, O.C.
February 2011

Dear colleagues,

I have just returned from a Board of Directors meeting of the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) in lovely (but very cold) Calgary, Alberta. I would like to share with you some recent accomplishments of your national professional organization and share a glimpse of what is on the horizon for 2011.

2010 RSNA Annual Meeting

To begin, I am pleased to inform you that the CAR’s presence at the 2010 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Annual Meeting in Chicago garnered great success. Overall, our delegation took part in over 30 events and meetings. We met with the leaderships of many radiology organizations such as the American College of Radiology (ACR), the RSNA, the Société française de radiologie (SFR – France), the Ontario Association of Radiologists (OAR) and the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). We also met with our important CAR partners and industry colleagues. A highlight of the RSNA was the CAR Canadian Reception held on the evening of Sunday November 28th at the Palmer House Hilton. We were pleased to offer Canadian football fans the chance to watch the 2010 CFL Grey Cup during the event, which was attended by over 300 people. Everyone loved it and is looking forward to the next year’s reception!

CAR Guidelines

At our January Board Meeting, we approved more updated CAR Guidelines bringing us one step closer to completing an update on all of our CAR Guidelines. We are pleased that the CAR is continuing to play the critical role for Canadian healthcare of helping physicians to order the most appropriate imaging first.

Working Groups

We have about two dozen working groups active in different capacities for your CAR. The work of our Quality Assurance working group is one example of work being done to benefit radiology. Working with our Lifelong Learning Liaison working group, a practice audit contest for residents was introduced for our 2011 Annual Scientific Meeting. The working group has also now completed a Clinical Audit Guide, which will be soon available on our website at The group, whose goal is to provide radiologists across the country with the necessary tools to tackle important issues, will next be working on Peer Review Guidelines. We will keep you up-to-date on the progress of other working groups throughout 2011.

2011 – Looking Ahead

There are several other exciting initiatives being undertaken in 2011:

  • Completing the new CAR website:
  • Exploring multi-modality accreditation, in addition to the already established Mammography Accreditation Program
  • Developing a strategic plan for 2011-2016. You are encouraged to let the CAR know your ideas and vision for radiologists and imaging in the future Canadian healthcare landscape. You can do so by sending us an email at or by calling 613 860-3111.

2011 CAR ASM

Mark your calendar for the CAR 74th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) and the CAR Annual General Meeting being held in Montreal at the Hyatt Regency Hotel from April 28th to May 1st, 2011. This year we will be holding our meeting jointly with the 48th Annual Meeting of the Société canadienne-française de radiologie (SCFR). Click here for more details. The CAR will also be offering the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Course for Radiologists, taking place immediately before the ASM, on April 26 and 27, 2011. Registration coming soon for both events!

The CAR remains strong and your Board of Directors is working to make your national organization and profession stronger in 2011 and beyond.

Best wishes for the New Year and see you in Montreal!
