CAR CT Colonography Simulation Workshop – 2010

RSNA Canadian Reception
As is tradition, CAR will host a Canadian Reception during the RSNA meeting in Chicago. It will be held on Sunday, November 29 from 6:30–8:00pm in the Crystal Ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton (17 East Monroe St.). Volunteer as a CAR e–Newsletter Editor!
The CAR wishes to expand its e–communications to include a quarterly e–newsletter which, in addition to containing updates from the CAR, will also include 1) a section on national and
international radiology trends and issues and 2) news from provinces (via our provincial radiology association colleagues). We are currently seeking two volunteer editors, one editor for
each of these two sections. If you are interested in filling this critical volunteer role within the CAR, please contact Josée Roy–Pilon at jroy-pilon@car.ca or

Volunteers still needed for CAR Accreditation Programs, Standards and Guidelines
Thank you to the many volunteers currently active in the CAR. Without you, there is no CAR. Still, we need more of you!
We continue to seek volunteers with digital mammography capabilities in particular to be reviewers for the Mammography Accreditation Program.
We also still seek volunteers to update the 2005 CAR Guidelines in the areas of: Musculoskeletal System, Cardiovascular System, Thoracic System, Gastrointestinal System, Trauma,
Cancer and Pediatrics. A short time commitment over a few weeks is required for each guidelines section.
With increasing public attention on quality in healthcare, CAR Standards are crucial. The CAR is still seeking volunteers to work on CAR standards for: Standard CT; Radiation
Protection; Interventional Radiology; GI Standards; and Pediatric Standards. Standards Working Groups require a limited time commitment of on average six months depending on the task.

We are pleased to share that the new CAR by–laws presented at the 2009 Annual General Meeting (with a couple of minor changes requested by Industry Canada) received ministerial approval from
Industry Canada on July 15. Please refer to the CAR's new By–laws on the CAR member–only website or call the office to receive a copy by mail.

The CAR has produced a bilingual poster on its guidelines for Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis to complement its NSF Advisory.

A Synopsis of CAR Quality Assurance Initiatives
In meetings over the summer with governments and funding agencies, including the Federal and Quebec governments and Canada Health Infoway, the CAR has continued to highlight the importance of its
quality assurance initiatives, including our work with diagnostic imaging referral guidelines. Governments and agencies are extremely interested in the responsible approach to imaging care that you,

Yellowknife, NWT, with a presentation by Dr. Bill Mason of the CRF Board during the 14th International Congress of Circumpolar Health. Only your support will allow the CRF to continue such great work,
so please donate to the CRF when you pay your CAR dues or at anytime through the CAR office.

Some Recent Meetings
The CAR at FMRAC
Dr. Bob Miller represented the CAR at the annual meeting of the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada on June 15 in Halifax.
The meeting focussed on the value of a national physician registry and licensure and provided an opportunity to highlight numerous issues of relevance to radiologists on this topic including the
importance of national standards of practice.
Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Medical Isotopes
The CAR remains active weekly on this Health Canada advisory group to help address the medical imaging challenges resulting from the restriction of medical isotope supply resulting from the shutdown
of the Chalk River reactor (which now will be down into the first quarter of 2010). In addition to our presentation to the Standing Committee on Natural Resources on June 9 on which we
previously reported to you, CAR President Dr. Ted Lyons gave a
presentation on September 9 to the Expert Review Panel on Medical Isotope Production which is assessing proposals submitted by the
private and public sectors for alternatives to producing Molybdenum–99/Technetium–99m.
CAR at Radiology and Medical Meetings
CAR President Dr. Ted Lyons has represented the CAR at numerous radiology and other medical meetings in recent months including the annual meetings of
CIRA, CAMRT and the
CMA
(the later where we also attended meetings of the Specialist Forum of other national specialty societies and the Wait Time Alliance). The CAR will attend meetings with other national medical
organizations and provincial radiology associations throughout the fall. Such collaborations are essential for the CAR to fill its role as the national voice of radiology in Canada.
The CAR and Industry Working Together
The provision of healthcare in Canada, as in any country, is unquestionably a system of partnerships, a system the CAR reflects in its operation. Consulting with our industry colleagues is
extremely important as the CAR works to promote the best radiology care possible for Canadians.
With that in mind, Past President Dr. David Vickar gave a presentation on August 19 to the diagnostic imaging committee of MEDEC, the
national association representing Canadian medical technology companies.
In addition, the CAR held a successful CAR and Industry Roundtable entitled Working Together for the Health of Canadians on September 10 in Ottawa where representatives of eight
imaging companies took part in an exchange with the CAR leadership (Presidents and CEO).
