An Update from the President of the
Canadian Radiological Foundation

Ian Hammond, MD, FRCPC, FACR
November 2013

President’s Comments

It is my pleasure to draw your attention to those items that were supported by the Canadian Radiological Foundation (CRF) since my last message in June. You will see that these include two scientific research studies and the very important CAR guidance on the lifecycle of medical imaging equipment due out later this year. The CRF board believes that all of these undertakings fulfil the essential mandate of the Foundation to advance the art and science of radiology in Canada. This work would not be possible without the generous contributions of our members, and I would especially like to thank those of you who have donated to the CRF.

The CRF is also looking at other projects to support in 2014 including a potential pan-Canadian appropriateness/quality study. More details on these will be shared in 2014.

Projects

The mandate of the CRF is to fund projects which help to shape the future of radiology in Canada. In keeping with this directive, the CRF supported the following recent projects:

Research Studies

Laurent Milot

Paul Babyn

Sonia Vanderby

CAR Lifecycle Guidance for Medical Imaging Equipment in Canada

The CRF is participating in an important project that the CAR is leading in collaboration with other partners to create national guidance on the acquisition and maintenance of medical imaging technology. As jurisdictions grapple with increasing pressures on the healthcare system, we believe more than ever that such guidance is a critical part of the solution to health resource management for all jurisdictions. The main and summary reports have been drafted and are awaiting final approval from the Boards of the partners on this project, and will be available on the CAR website before the end of this year.
