CAR CT Colonography Simulation Workshop –
Sept 30-Oct 1, 2010, Québec City

We had a very successful CT Colonography Workshop from March 5–7 in Vancouver (in collaboration with the British Columbia Radiological Society). Now mark your calendars for our second CTC Workshop to be held from Sept 30-Oct 1 in Québec City. Please visit our website for any updates on registration for this event.

Recognition of our VIVs!

Currently, there are dozens of volunteers active in the CAR, from advisors and reviewers for our accreditation programs, to working groups for CAR CME events and the creation of new CAR standards, guidelines and advisories. There is no CAR without you! As a token of our appreciation, we are delighted to hold a special Very Important Volunteer (VIV) reception immediately prior to our Annual Scientific Meeting Gala on April 24. Please watch out for your VIV invitation coming soon!

And we always need more of you - to find out about CAR volunteer opportunities, contact Andrea Nelson, Director, Quality Assurance at anelson@car.ca.

Highlights of CAR Quality Assurance Initiatives

In January of this year, the CAR adopted two new Standards:

  • CAR CT Colonography Standards – created with international input!
  • CAR Technical Standards for Bone Mineral Densitometry Reporting

Keep an eye out for more to come in 2010.

We are pleased to share that the CAR has received funding from Health Canada for a third guidelines study to run through September 2011 titled Demand-Side Control in Diagnostic Imaging: Targeting Interventions to Improve Physician Compliance with Best Practice Guidelines. Ensuring the clinical effectiveness of imaging exams is increasingly acknowledged as a critical part of the solution towards sustainable Canadian health care.

The CAR’s role on the international stage strengthens. CAR Guidelines Working Group Chair, Dr. Martin Reed, is co-convenor of a group of 13 international organizations looking at creating international guidelines adaptable to conditions that exist in developing countries. The World Health Organization met with the group in Geneva March 1-3 to collect their expert opinions on referral guidelines for appropriate use of radiation imaging in order to move towards developing user friendly referral guidelines adaptable for developing countries. Our international leadership supports radiology globally and allows us to grow knowledge that we can apply for the good of radiology right here at home. This work is made possible through a grant of the Canadian Radiological Foundation (CRF). If you would like to contribute to the ongoing efforts of the CRF, you may make a donation of any amount along with your dues payment or at any time during the year by contacting Chantale Bessette, CAR Membership Coordinator, at cbessette@car.ca or 613 860-3111, ext. 204. All donations are issued a charitable receipt at the end of the year.

National Physician Survey - Coming Spring 2010!

The next National Physician Survey will be starting in the spring 2010. The survey is conducted co-operatively every three years by The College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). It reaches out to all physicians in Canada as well as medical residents and medical students for your input on Canadian health’s human resource issues. Therefore, the results become a valuable information resource for us all. When you receive the survey, please take a few minutes to respond. Your input is important and greatly appreciated.

Your Voice of Radiology

With the ever-growing strain on the health care system it is critical to ensure that radiology’s voice is heard far and wide.

In 2009, The CAR more than doubled over the previous year the number of media requests it handled in previous years; more than 50 in total.  Recent requests centered on the full body airport scanners, mammography screening standards, quality of radiology care and radiation dose. The CAR also partnered with BCRS (with sponsorship from GE) to promote the role of the radiologist at the Olympics and Paralympics. In addition, regular postings by members of the imaging team at the Games to our Scanning the 2010 Games blog site provide a unique glimpse inside the Games.

The CAR was active in recent months at: a pan-Canadian meeting of Canada Health Infoway (on the continuing digitization of radiology through PACS and EHRs); Osteoporosis Canada expert panel meeting (bone mineral densitometry); the RCPSC specialty committee meetings (i.e. diagnostic radiology and pediatric radiology); CMA’s Specialist and GP Forums; the conference of the Société canadienne française de radiologie; fall provincial radiology association meetings for the Atlantic region (NSAR), Alberta (ASR) and British Columbia (BCRS); and a very successful RSNA where we also hosted the largest Canadian reception yet!

Governments also continue to seek us out on medical imaging issues. For example, we continue as a member of Health Canada’s AdHoc Group of Experts on Medical Isotopes and consult with all government parties on critical issues – a most recent example is our participation two weeks ago in a consultation session of the NDP on The Next Generation of Health Care.
