Dear CAR member:

It is with great pleasure that we share with you our first of what will be regular updates to you on your CAR at work!

A Message from your President - Your President's Message from Dr. David Vickar.

Mark your calendars!

RSNA Canadian Reception - As is tradition, CAR will host a Canadian Reception during the RSNA meeting in Chicago. It will be held on Sunday, November 30 from 6:30-8:00pm in the Crystal Ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton (17 East Monroe St.). Please RSVP to Elise at ecatudal@car.ca or 613-860-3111 by November 19 if you are able to attend. We look forward to seeing many of you there!

2009 Annual Scientific Meeting -  Your 2009 ASM will be in Montreal, April 23-26, 2009, at the Marriott Ch?teau Champlain with keynote speaker Dr. James Thrall, Chairman of the American College of Radiology. The theme is "Radiologists as Physician Consultants."  Information on the Call for Abstracts is currently available online.  Further program information will be on the CAR website in the next weeks, so plan a return visit to the site for more details!

When we listen to the many challenges and concerns expressed in the public and the media about the access and quality of healthcare in Canada, it is clear how critical it is to have a national association looking out for your profession and the care you provide Canadians. Your CAR's active and growing contributions to quality assurance are central to current issues driving healthcare - learn more in the following three topics.

Accreditation Programs

The CAR's Mammography Accreditation Program, now in operation for 15 years, has a group of volunteer experts working to ensure its high standards, with a focus to facilitate the MAP's digital accreditations. The MAP has even been sought out internationally - see the recent article from Bermuda.

The CAR's BMD Accreditation Program, which was on hold for a period, is currently being updated by a volunteer group of experts, with plans to reinstate the program in the Spring 2009.

CAR Guidelines, Standards and Advisories - Integral to the quality of care and the future of radiology are national guidelines and standards. The CAR's new working group structure will facilitate the CAR's future creation of these crucial standards and guidelines and timely advisories.

NSF Advisory - the new Advisory on Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis is now on the CAR website!

CAR 2005 Guidelines will be updated in 2009 - the guidelines are available in booklet form and in members-only sections of websites for the College of Family Physicians of Canada, Canadian Medical Association, and CAR.

CAR Standards are being produced and updated on an ongoing basis, with more to follow the Teleradiology and Compression in Digital Imaging standards announced earlier this year.

Guidelines Projects - The use of appropriateness criteria in the ordering of DI studies is garnering tremendous attention as a part of the solution to the challenges around wait times, radiation exposure, quality care and health human resources.  The CAR undertook a guidelines project in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the results of which identify the value in making guidelines accessible to referring physicians in their daily workflow and identified areas of further study. Other guidelines projects are underway in Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan, with additional interest expressed from the federal and other provincial governments. The CAR's focus on solutions makes its guidelines initiatives of great interest to governments grappling with healthcare challenges!

Your Voice to Governments - Your CAR has been communicating and meeting with governments, including with Health Canada, the Federal Health Committee, Liberal Health Critic, President of Treasury Board, the governments of Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia,  as well as national committees of the  Public Health Agency (National Breast Screening Committee) and Federal Provincial Territorial Radiation Protection Committee - information from these and future meetings with ALL governments will be shared regularly.

CAR Journal - Your CARJ will be published by Elsevier effective January 2009 - this will result in a significant cost reduction in production of the Journal and in the highest quality Journal services to members.

Sept Board Minutes - The minutes of the CAR Board of Directors meeting in September are posted in the members-only section of the website at www.car.ca.

Your membership IS the CAR! - The CAR is not a separate entity doing work for radiologists, the CAR IS you, its members. The success of your CAR is directly linked to the strength of its membership. Ensure your CAR is a strong voice and well positioned to guide you through the challenges your profession faces. Now in the last quarter of 2008, if you have not paid your CAR dues, please do so either online, or by calling 613-860-3111 or sending a cheque to the CAR office. Your CAR is only as strong as its membership!

Donate to your Canadian Radiological Foundation - The CRF, your charitable foundation, funds research and education initiatives in radiology. It is currently undertaking a study of imaging equipment and utilization in Northern Canada, and results will be available in 2009. It can only carry out such important projects with your support. Please donate to your CRF when you pay your CAR dues or at anytime through the CAR office.

Volunteer for the CAR
The CAR is its members. Thank you to the volunteers who have been and continue to be a part of many working groups of the CAR. Still, more help is needed! We are seeking volunteers to be reviewers for the Mammography Accreditation Program and the RCPSC CME accreditation program but we also wish to hear from you about your particular areas of interest - there are countless ways to become involved.

Much more is happening within your CAR but respecting your busy schedules we will share more in our next update, including highlights of the strong alliances CAR has and is building with provincial, national and international organizations!
